Garden Route Where to Eat

While excellent dining options can be found throughout the Garden Route, Knysna is one of the region's stars. The city is particularly famous for its oysters, and these succulent shellfish are celebrated each July at the Knysna Oyster Festival. No visit is complete without an evening at the Knysna Oyster Factory! The seafood in general is top-notch, and prepared in a variety of styles. Head down to the new Waterfont complex to enjoy grilled linefish or Portuguese-style prawns while overlooking the yachts in the marina and the peaceful lagoon. In town, choose from elegant, French-inspired dining to local pubs like Harry B's, which features live music on the weekends.

Plettenberg Bay is the cosmopolitan center of the Garden Route, full of trendy cafes, bars and restaurants serving innovative modern cuisine as well as the freshest seafood specialties. Mossel Bay and George have their fair share of quality seafood places and restaurants serving traditional South African dishes. And don't miss local gems like the Ronde Cafe in Wilderness, which prepares breakfasts, lunches and cakes to die for. In-between mealtimes, a stop at one of the farm stalls that dot the Garden Route is sure to satisfy cravings with tempting local cheeses, fruits and sweets.
